LaPorteCounty.Biz Supports the Intermodal Efforts

Laportecounty.Biz exists to support growth and development throughout our county. It is the responsibility of the staff to evaluate, research, and engage in evaluating the potential benefits and requirements of all projects that come to our county. The proposed intermodal is no exception. The potential of such a project was being researched years before any of the current concepts came to light. With our county positioned close to Chicago, access to all major eastern railroads, and the potential to accumulate the land capable of handling such a facility we felt there was enough reason to look further into the logistics and transportation industry. Warehousing and transportation positions in La Porte County currently pay $39,005 annually—5% more than the state average in that sector and 24 % more than the average La Porte County wage of $31,389.

GLEDC and MCEDC have been in communication with intermodal developers and researched the industry as part of normal economic development procedures to increase jobs and investment in La Porte County. Laportecounty.Biz sponsored three tours of the CenterPoint Intermodal Center at Elwood, IL which is the most comparable to this project, in order to provide participants with direct exposure to such a facility.  Developers and managers of the Elwood Facility state that 5,000 employees work there; ten-million square feet of buildings, 100 miles of utilities, a fire department, wastewater treatment and ball diamonds are constructed; and $500 million is invested so far.

Currently laportecounty.biz is assisting with disseminating information applicable to this project. To that end we have hosted the Task Force web page and provided a link to lpintermodal.com. Those web sites summarize the process that intermodal development must go through, specifically in La Porte County, including identifying and assembling suitable property, conducting engineering, economic and environmental studies, securing zoning changes and undergoing a review process with the Intermodal Task Force.  Developers are currently conducting these studies and will present them to the appropriate commissions, councils and the Task Force.

There is great potential benefit to an intermodal project and all requirements will be weighed with those to determine viability of the project. Laportecounty.Biz strives to attract business, jobs and investment and will assist the efforts of the task force, elected officials and developers to determine if our community is a good location for an intermodal facility and secure the related benefits.
