The Michigan City Area Schools (MCAS) - http://www.mcas.k12.in.us offer students a wide variety of academic, athletic and extra-curricular activities. The MCAS is committed to excellence in the process of preparing our students for the 21st century. By focusing the curriculum, learning environment and staff development to meet the needs of our community, our students' educational goals are met in a quality learning environment.
The MCAS include
9 elementary schools (grades K-5), two middle schools (grads 6 & 7), one junior high school (grades 8 & 9), one senior high school (grades 10 - 12) and one alternative schools for a total enrollment of approx. 7,000 students. The school year is 180 days.
Various other programs such as Special Education, Vocational Education, Talent Development Program and Alternative School are available for those students who are more successful in a non-traditional learning environment.
The average three-year pupil expenditure is $7,281. Forty percent of Michigan City's graduates took the Scholastic Aptitude Test in
2004 with a composite score of 948. The State of Indiana's SAT average is
1007 points. |

There are excellent vocational day and evening training programs offered by the Michigan City Area Schools - A.K. Smith Career Center ( www.mcas.k12.in.us). This includes high school vocational course, cooperative education programs and adult education. The Vocational Trades Program is geared to applied technical math, auto by repair, auto mechanics, building trades, computer applications, computer programming, cosmetology, restaurant management/food services, secretarial lab/word processing, small engine repair/marine trades, technical drafting, welding and fabrication, electronics/robotics, health occupations, machine trades such as CNC, CIM and robotics, medical secretary and child care training. |
