Natural gas and electric service in the Michigan City area is provided by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO), a subsidiary company of NiSource, an energy-based, investor-owned holding company.
- NIPSCO is a tax-paying private utility serving a 12,000 square mile area in the northern one-third of Indiana, with a population of more than 2.2 million.
- NIPSCO provides electric service to 421,000 customers and natural gas to 739,400 customers. It is the largest gas distribution company and the second largest electric distribution company in Indiana. The current capacity of the system is 3,361 MW. Natural gas is provided by six pipeline suppliers averaging 1,000 BTU's per cubic foot. There are no restrictions on the amounts of gas and electric sales to new users.
